Watusi Hunting in Texas

Watusi Hunting in Texas

Watusi Hunting Season:Watusi can be hunted yearround in Texas, and the best part is that their horns never stop growing!

  • Origin: Africa
  • Horn Size:  Up to 8 Feet
  • Weight: 900-2,000 pounds
  • Lonesome Bull Ranch Population:32

The Watusi are native to Africa, commonly known as Royal Ox. Although they can seem very calm, they are very aggressive, especially if they smell blood. We have often had to run them off of a freshly harvested animal and they seem to be driven crazy from the smell of the blood. Some of the Watusi we have harvested here on the Lonesome Bull Ranch could fit 6 men inside the horns!

Interesting Watusi Hunting Information

Texas Watusi Hunting

The Ankole-Watusi derives from central African cattle of the Ankole group of Sanga cattle breeds. Some of these were brought to Germany as zoo specimens in the early twentieth century, and from there spread to other European zoos.

Some were imported to the United States, and in 1960 a herd was started in New York State by crossbreeding some of them with an unrelated Canadian bull. A breed society, the Ankole Watusi International Registry, was set up in 1983 and in 1989 a breed standard was drawn up. In 2016 the total number for the breed was thought to be approximately 1500 head, some 80% of them in the United States.
